Annie Extra Credit

As a child, I surprisingly never enjoyed watching the movie Annie, which is shocking because looking back, I thought I would have liked seeing my exact hairstyle as a toddler represented on screen by red-headed Annie. Being represented in a movie, even just by appearance is something that has been a discussion this semester, and it is clear that black girls do not have a fair and proper representation in media. I had not seen the new Annie movie until the showing, and as I watched it, I thought of how black girlhood is represented. I think it is important that Annie was a bold, consistently happy character, showing that she worked to not be a victim of an unfortunate childhood. Beyond that, I loved the fact that society fell in love with Annie through her social media presence, potentially showing black girls that they too deserved to be seen as beloved in society.
